SAE Student entering the Eurovision Song Contest
| Stefan Lebert, currently studying the Sound Engineering Diploma in Bangkok, handed in 6 songs for the Swedish part of the Eurovision Song Contest this year. The traditional way is to send in a CD and let a secret jury from the music industry choose 32 contestants to fight for the winner song. This year the jury choose 31 songs and let the Swedish Television’s web page be a platform for a Wild Card chosen by the Swedish people voting by SMS and become the contestant number 32. At first there were 177 songs granted and uploaded together with a video on the homepage and after a week Stefan, and his songwriter group based in Thailand, lost 4 of the songs when the total of contestants became 100. The week after another 50 songs disappeared but he managed to keep two of the best songs. The song “Come and Get Me Now” belong to the pop category where Stefan sings together with Maria who wrote the lyrics. Stefan’s daughter Thelma is 15 years old and wrote the other song, “Out of My Reach” which is in the rock category. Stefan has arranged and recorded both of the songs and is now competing with his own daughter into the finals! J The interesting thing is now that another web page that follows the Eurovision song Contest closely (www.schlagerpinglan.se ) have ranked Thelma’s “Out of My Reach” as number 1 and “Come and Get Me Now” as number 4 on their top-list based on all the original 177 songs. The Swedish television sent out a letter to the 50 contestants left and showing the internal order of most voted songs so far and it shows on the 28 Oct that “Come and Get Me Now” is number 1 and “Out of My Reach” is at the moment on 17th place. But there can be a lot of changes before we go into the final week on the 4th Nov where we only have 10 songs left. And that’s where its starts to be exciting. The winner will compete in Sweden during Feb 2010 and compete in the direct broadcast to get the best song contribution from Sweden to compete with the other European countries in May 2010. You can listen to the songs at www.svt.se or direct link http://svt.se/2.118547/1.1734150/117_out_of_my_reach or http://svt.se/2.117377/pop_grupp Unless you have a Swedish mobile account you can not vote but listening is ok and the result you hear is also partly thanks to SAE that give a wide education that’s been useful even in the recording process according to Stefan. |

Shot On Red workshop @ SAE Bangkok
| SAE Bangkok hosted the Shot On Red workshop at our private HD Screening Theatre in June 2009. The outcome was well received by our guests from the industry. Mr Ted Schilowitz starts by introducing RED Digital Cinema Camera Company history, product development and the future of cinema camera. We had the chance to take a sneak peek into the much awaited Scala and Epic release and hold the Scala prototype. The lists of movie, music video and commercial that was shot on RED ONE will very long indeed. The question now is very much “What is not shot on RED?” Both industry guests and our Digital Film students will overwhelmed by RED technology and eagerly waiting for the release, hopefully by Fall 2009. |

SAE Staffs and students Digital Film Project
Director's statementI have been planning this project for over two years as I wanted to create a compelling emotional drama with elements of surrealism or mysticism. It all started with the idea that we often do not realize the meaning of people as they enter our lives. Sometimes we only realize the importance of life and the impact we can make on other people's lifes ones they're gone. Then we regret not having realized them for what they meant to us. But sometimes we realize them in time as a chapter of our life comes to a close and it is the strongest positive emotion that I have ever felt and that I wanted to share with the world. The Tsunami made such a strong impact on the world and Thailand for it reminds us of how fragile our existence really is and that we should be very grateful for our lifes and the people we get to share it with as long as we can. Pre-production began with a 6 page script in mid-2008 and two to three locations. My favored actor for the lead part had to leave the country while the pre-production was slow and tedious. It was not going according to schedule. Feeling overwhelmed by my double role as the director and the only producer, attempting to form a production team from the individual digital film production students of which some were serious and some were in need of encouragement, I was ready to admit defeat. Sugimasa Yamashita though helped me to believe in the potential of this film and took on the role of an additional producer allowing me to focus more on my role as a director. After discussing the script with Sugimasa Yamashita and the new cast, we felt that more details and background stories were needed in order for the audience to get emotionally involved in the drama portrayed. In order to tell the whole story rather than an excerpt of it I revised the screenplay and it quickly turned to 18 pages. This of course entailed the 7 locations and 7 shooting days but as our team of film students grew stronger and the pre-production was picking up pace we felt very confident. Utilizing the equipment of SAE Institute Bangkok and with the support of Mahajak, St. Luis Catholic Church, Krungthon 1 Hospital, Tubar and friends who were nice enough to allow us to shoot on their premises and everybody who invested their time and sweat into this project, we were able to accomplish this on a next to nothing budget that I was able to provide with the help of my very supportive family. A long movie entails a long post-production and while I did the editing and color grading myself, the most time consuming part turned out to be the sound editing and the musical score that Mario Cox took on despite his busy schedule and to whom I am endlessly grateful to. Group project of course DFM0508, SAE Institute Bangkok. |
SAE Sound effect Workshop with Kam Cooney
| One of the coollest things about movies are the special effects. Ever wonder how a car flips over when shot at the tires during a high speed chase? Or a knife thrown and as the camera pans hits bullseye at the victim's chest. These are the things that Kam Cooney designs at his workshop. Fake Knife, grenades, arrows, rubber chains he uses to make the action looks real on camera. With many years of working experience in Hollywood Kam shares many of his stories of working in the industry. Thanks to Kam Cooney for showing us a glimpse of the special effects side of moviemaking. Surely we would like to have those cool effects in our films. Thank you Sugi and team!!! |
