SAE Institute offers a Bachelor’s Degree program in association with Middlesex University (UK), who is SAE’s long-standing academic partner. The program is two years in total, the first year comprising the diploma in either audio engineering or digital film production. The first year forms the technical basis in production, after which the second year explores the issues affecting the creative media industry as a whole and general topics such as contracts and legal issues, copyright infringement and cultural perspectives.
Due to the nature of the program, direct entry into the second year is not usually possible unless a student has: a) A diploma from another SAE Institute, or b) Sufficient industry experience, which can only be assessed by the Program Manager on a case-by-case basis.
Overview of the industry:
This module surveys the structure and operation of the infotainment, edutainment and entertainment industries; the issues currently facing the industry and considers the policies and attitudes of the industry as they relate to the world market. Emphasis is placed on developments in technology and changes in social structures.
Contemporary issues:
A key element in effective membership to the infotainment industry is the ability to identify, analyze and contribute intelligently to issues currently influencing the industry and the wider community. This module explores contemporary issues in ways that encourage students to take an active part in professional dialogue and debate.
Business Planning and Management:
Managing a small business requires a range of skills and attitudes in a number of key areas. Of major importance are areas such as administration, finance, personnel, networking and forward planning. This module aims to provide students with a range of management skills relevant to working in the creative media industry.
Marketing, Promotion and Publicity:
A key element in any successful enterprise is the ability to promote, publicize and market the product or services provided. This module provides students with a range of ideas and attitudes, which will help them to develop successful projects by making them more effective in the fields of publicity and promotion.
Research and information sources:
The ability to plan and implement independent research is of fundamental importance to persons preparing for careers in the infotainment industry. This module establishes some basic methodologies, skills and attitudes so the student can successfully complete research in this field.
Cultural Perspectives:
This component of the program is aimed at providing aesthetic foundations and creative perspectives regarding design, storytelling, cultural ideas and techniques of expression.
Copyright and Legal issues:
Students are able to understand their legal responsibilities associated with publishing creative work and make appropriate decisions to protect their intellectual property rights and business efforts.
Music Producers and Industry Personnel:
Identify and discuss the key skills and characteristics of personnel in the infotainment industry with particular emphasis on record producers and music industry professionals and understand the workings of the music business.
Education Applications:
It is highly likely that graduates will engage in teaching others at some stage during their careers. In that context it is desirable that they have a basic understanding of the principles of teaching and learning, and of the processes of curriculum development and delivery.
Industry Perspectives and issues:
Students are required to think critically about the origins of the contemporary industry, the range of problems and operational issues confronting industry leaders; and to analyze concerns and issues facing society today.
Professional placement:
This module assists the student in gaining supervised professional experience in public or commercial organizations and facilitates the students' informed transition from an education environment to the work place. Based on the 'internship' model, this allows students to make contacts for future employment prior to completion of the program. Independent self-promotion is encouraged and students are responsible for gaining their own work-placement position.
Specialized research project:
This module is the culmination of the degree program and is designed to demonstrate a student’s ability to initiate, implement and evaluate a substantial creative/technical project under SAE staff supervision. Students are expected to demonstrate advanced abilities in a chosen area of specialization and to participate in academically valid research.
